Cycle Training to National Standard
The type of cycling training you may well have heard of is Cycling Proficiency run in schools for Year 6 pupils. This training, is based on The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Cycling Proficiency Awarded scheme.
The National Cycling Standard was created in response to an increased number of cyclists on the road and a requirement to set a uniform teaching standard across the country run by professional. Cycling groups like CTC & British Cycling with RoSPA and Department of Trainsport developed the standard. In Sept’06. In 2007 a pilot award scheme was launched called Bikeability and in April’07 this was launched nationwide.
Around the country all providers of cycle training, from Local authorities to independent trainers were invited to take part in training their staff to the National Cycling Standard.
Training
We offer a number of courses at different levels based on the National Cycling Standard syllabus. We are also a Government Approved Training Company who run the Bikeability awarded scheme.
Level 1
Be able to demonstrate skills and understanding to make a trip and undertake activities safely in a motor traffic free area.
Level 2
Be able to demonstrate skills and understanding to make a trip and undertake activities safely to be able to make a trip to school, work or for leisure on quiet roads.
Level 3
Be able to demonstrate skills and understanding to make a trip and undertake activities safely to be able to make a trip to school, work or for leisure on busy roads and using complex junctions and road features.
Please note each level must be completed before the next level can be started. In practice Level 2 and 3 students will have the lower levels incorporated into the course they are on. Where a rider has already gained a number of skills the course times may well be less.
Courses Timetable
The level 1 and 2 courses are normally set by Cycling Now and the school or establishment hosting the course. Course times can vary to suit the schools timetable. Length of Level 1 and 2 is 8 to 10 hours and can be split into 4/5 hours slots of 2 hour slots depending on school timetables. The times for level 3 courses are variable and will often fit in with the trainee.
Level 1 and 2 in schools
Depending on the area we are able to run Bikeability, the government sponsored cycling training scheme, free of charge. Cycling Now can offer Bikeability Training to Year 5-6 and Year 7-8 pupils in schools. With the course comes a badge and certificate for each level for those who pass. Book a course.
